Mold Prevention In Your Bathroom

By: Aydan Corkern

The bathroom is just as much the center of the home as the kitchen is, since the bathroom will get almost as much traffic, so doesn't it deserve to be just as well kept? There are a number of things that you can do to make your bathroom more inviting to your family and your guests and one of the first things that you want to do is find out if there is mold and then, get rid of it.

Mold can manifest in your bathroom on the ceilings, walls, or even (heaven forbid) the carpet. If you have carpet in your bathroom, it needs to be removed. I know, you or your family members are complaining "I like carpet in there" or "the floor is cold when I get out of the tub". Forget all that and realize that the carpet that you love so dearly gets soaking wet every time you get out of the shower or the bathtub and when it gets wet, it becomes molded. Carpet also becomes molded when you throw damp towels onto it and especially if there is carpet in the closet (where many people put their dirty clothes). Install tile or something else that is considered waterproof and purchase a good quality bathroom rug to step out of the shower on. Purchase something of high quality that you find comfortable and that is machine washable. Washing it will kill any mold growing in it.

Mold is caused by excess moisture in an area of your home, so getting rid of it in your bathroom is both difficult and a priority. The bathroom is one of the most humid areas of the house, so ridding it of excess humidity is difficult to do without an exhaust vent or a window. One of these things should be installed in every bathroom in your home to help vent moisture and heat. Think of the steam that builds up in the bathroom when you take a shower; it clings to the ceiling and walls and soaks it. It remains wet for hours after you've already left the room and if you have a large family or take more than one bath or shower a day, it may not ever dry out at all!

Something else that you want to do is make sure that the pipes under your sink aren't dripping into the cabinet or onto the floor. Leaking water into a wooden cabinet can cause it to rot and become molded and force you to purchase a new vanity.

Checking if your toilet is flushing properly is also a priority, since toilets that overflow often cause water damage.
