It is important to make sure that we do everything in our power to keep ourselves safe from fires. We need to install smoke detectors, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and anything else that can give you advanced warning of a fire so that you can get out in time. Always make an escape plan and pack a small emergency bag to keep handy so that you can grab it and run. Most of the time, you might not have enough time to do much else. Try to make your home as fire proof as possible and make sure that the outside of your home is just as safe as it is on the inside. On the outside of your home, you will want to make sure that the garage is always picked up and put in its rightful place, all tree limbs and trees are keep trimmed and that the trimmings are moved away from the home. Make sure that you clean out the water troughs of anything that could catch on fire should there be one. If there is anything on your roof, you will need to try to get these things off. If you put a lot of Christmas lights on your home, you will need to make sure that they are unplugged at night and that the cords are safe from getting wet so as not to be able to start a fire on their own. With the more strings of lights that you hook together, these wires can get very warm very fast. Never overload your plug-ins because this time of year can be the worst time for fires in the home and outside the home because of this reason alone. If you own your own home, you will want to make sure that you have enough plug-ins so that you don't have to have a lot of extension cords running all over your home that could cause a fire to start. Replace your filters in your heating units at least once a year, but if you live on a dirt road you might want to change it more often depending on the amount of traffic and the dryness of the season. Then it might be best to change it every three months. Last but not least, clean out the lint screen of your dryer every time you use it. You would be surprised to know that if you have young children using your dryer, they will forget to do this very thing.
