How Electrical Fires Start In Your House

By: Aydan Corkern

Do you realize that electrical fires happen more often than any other type of fire? There are over 67,000 fires in homes that account for $800 million in property damage with many of them that could have been prevented. They say that 500 people have lost their lives with a little more than 2000 people injured from these fires. With a little more care in the usage of electricity, we could reduce these numbers dramatically.

If you own a new home, the wiring is usually the least of your worries but you should do checks on them because wiring is still a major cause of fires. In new homes you should try to have the builder. If you are having the home built, put as many plug- ins as you would like so you don't have to put in so many extension cords to run your small appliances. If you have an older home, you will really need to do checks on the wiring more often. In these older homes, you will most likely find that you don't have enough plug-ins for all of your things. Just remember to try not to overload these extension cords. If you aren't using this item, don't leave it plugged in. It is just safer to unplug it.

Try not to put long cords in heavy traffic areas as this can make the cords become damaged very fast and can put you in harm's way. If you have young children in your home you will need to make them understand the meaning of not to close. If you don't have a lot of plug-ins you will need to make sure that you don't stretch these cords across the floor. Just try to arrange your living room around them and never pinch them behind appliances or furniture.

If you are doing your check of sockets and one feels warm or hot to the touch, you will need to have it fixed as soon as possible as this could mean that you have a bad wire that will need to be removed and replaced. Never use small appliances on a wet floor even if you have a newer home with breakers or an older home that might have fuses.

With the holidays upon us, you will need to be extra careful when putting up all of yours lights. If you have a real tree, make sure you water it everyday but take extra caution so you do not wet the lights. Like most homes today, they will have artificial ones and these can also be a fire hazard in themselves. So always check everything before you set it up and never leave it on if you aren't home. A little foresight and the frequent inspection are worth the time in regards to you and your family.
