Decorative Painting Tips and Tricks

By: Joseph Gardener

Decorative painting can be an inexpensive way to add some color and style to a bland room. Instead of paying to repaint the entire wall, you can paint a simple pattern on the trim to accentuate the room's existing color scheme. Many decorative painting techniques are easy enough that any homeowner can quickly brighten up the look of their home in just a couple of hours. For those who prefer a professional touch, a custom New Jersey painting company can design accents that are perfect for your individual home.

The color scheme is the most important consideration when planning out your decorative painting project. Many painting styles are based on contrasting two different shades of the same color. Select a dark color then normal for the base paint and a lighter shade for the top layer. Layering the two shades will give you an end result that falls somewhere between the light and the dark.

A popular decorative painting technique employed by custom New Jersey painting companies is stenciling. Homeowners can create their own simple stencils out of any pattern they like, then use that as a guide to apply strongly colored paint to make the trim stand out. Try to make a stencil that is wide enough that you do not have to keep moving and repositioning it, but is also not so wide that it is hard to keep straight. Correcting a crooked pattern will be difficult and time-consuming, so take your time and do it right the first time.

Stencils can also be used with decorative painting to add a faux brick or stone finish. This is an easy way to make your home look like it was decorated by a professional custom New Jersey painting contractor at a fraction of the cost. Paint the entire wall in the color you wish to use for the mortar. While that is drying, create a stencil that represents your desired design for the mortarwork in between the bricks or stones. Filling in the holes in your stencil with a darker color to give the appearance of stones. After the first layer of paint is dry, use a brush to flick a bit of the brick-colored paint around to give the wall some depth and texture.

Sponging a wall's surface is another interesting decorative painting technique that can give the appearance of texture. This technique requires two shades of the same color and relies on the resulting visual contrast between the two. First, paint the wall in the darker color that you have chosen as your base. After this layer is dry, dip a sponge into the lighter shade and blot or drag it across the wall to achieve the desired effect. You can always sand or repaint the area if you do not get the texture you were looking for the first time. This is often a forgiving way to learn to add touches of decorative painting to your home since it is so easy to change.
