If you have ever been in the situation of having to deal with flood waters or the damage there after, you will probably want to put together a list of several things that you can do to prepare yourself ahead of time so that you can maybe save some of your things and especially yourself. This experience is hard on anyone young or old. Most people panic and they can't seem to be able to think clearly nor even do the small things that they will need to do in order for them to get through this kind of situation. Then you will have the ones that can keep a level head on their shoulders and seem to know all of the right things to do. For the elderly, however, this situation can be more devastating. The most important thing and the first thing on your list is YOU. You will need to set up an escape route so you don't get trapped in your home. Always make sure that you have the keys to your windows and doors within reach if you need to lock up your home at night. You will also need to set up an emergency bag that can be taken in a hurry. In this bag, you will want to put in the most essential items like a small first aid kit and any medicine that you take or need on a regular basis, a pair of pajamas, a change of clothes, and some money to tide you over until you can get to somewhere that you can possibility get more. You will also need to get with your family or friends to have them help you set up a place for you to stay until it's safe for you to return. If you have a disability, it is harder for you, as you have to rely completely on the help of others. So you should ask your local authority where they would be sending you in case of flood and to make sure that you tell your family so they will know where to find you when this is all over. In the event of this happening, you should make a separate list that you will put into your emergency bag. On this list, you will want to have the names and phone numbers of family, friends, your doctor, your insurance company, and even the number to your flood line telephone and your local authority.
