When the person searching the Internet for a specific product or service types the subject into the search box the search engine immediately searches through millions of indexed web pages and offers a selection of the ones which best match the typed words. The more relevant matches will appear higher up in the list and this is because the matches are all ranked appropriately. Bear in mind that a potential customer normally only looks at the first two or three listings on the page of results so the position your website appears at is really important. Most searchers only tend to click through the result of the top ten results as opposed to other listing down the line. This means, of course, that whether or not the customer will find your particular site all depends on which search engine they use and how that search engine ranks your website. The keywords included in your website play an important part in successful searching which draws traffic to your website, much more so than any flashing on or off line advertising campaign. Research has shown that when customers are searching for information on a given subject or are looking to buy a product or service, the site they choose is usually found in one of the following ways. The most common way is by using a search engine. This is followed in the popularity stakes by finding a website and clicking on a link which opens up another page or website related to the topic in question. And lastly, they may occasionally find what they are looking for by a site recommended by a friend or a link included in an article they have read. The search engine option of finding a website represents the choice of more than 90% of on line users. This effectively means that the other methods are only used by the remaining 10% of people. Search engines use what is known as a ranking algorithm and one of the chief rules here is that the location and frequency of keywords are regularly checked on websites. This also includes web pages linked to your site. Now you have a little more knowledge about how search engines work and the important role they play as far as your business is concerned you can either make your own attempt to maximize the traffic you have visiting your website or, if you can afford it, you could employ the services of an expert to get you up there at the top of the search engine rankings.
